Computer music pioneer Max Mathews passes away at 85 today.

Mathews wrote the first widely used computer program to generate sound in 1957. He also arranged the musical accompaniment for the song “Daisy Bell” which HAL sings along to in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. The “Max” in the modern music programming tool Max/MSP is named for Mathews.

Max Mathews dedicated his life to developing computer music performance and I’d like to say thanks for all his hard work.
